Kamala Harris Criticizes Trump Administration Amid Economic Turmoil

Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has publicly criticized President Donald Trump, blaming his administration for what she called the “greatest man-made economic crisis in modern presidential history.”

Speaking at the 20th anniversary gala of Emerge America—a group that supports Democratic women running for office—Harris made her most detailed public comments since stepping down in January after losing to Trump.

“Rather than promoting the core values of America, this administration is actively abandoning them,” Harris stated. “President Trump, his administration, and their allies are relying on fear as a tool to divide.”

Her remarks came as President Trump reached the 100-day mark of his second term, though Harris chose not to directly comment on that milestone, saying, “I will leave it to others to judge that.”

The event took place in the opulent ballroom of San Francisco’s historic Palace Hotel. Addressing the public’s perception of recent political developments, Harris acknowledged that many describe the current state of affairs as “absolute chaos,” but cautioned against being misled into believing that everything is disordered.

She claimed that the Trump administration aims to intimidate some people in order to deter others. However, she argued, “Fear is not the only thing that’s contagious—courage is contagious too,” drawing applause from the audience.

Earlier that week, Trump had given a speech praising his own record, dismissing criticism of his leadership style. “I’m making America great again,” he declared, arguing the U.S. had been “failing” and “mocked globally” before his return to power.

Economic and Policy Critiques

Harris condemned the economic situation under Trump, referring to it as the worst man-made economic crisis in recent presidential memory. She cited the administration’s recently enacted tariffs, saying they were “reckless” and had caused harm to workers, families, and businesses of all sizes.

She praised everyday Americans for pushing back, calling out government overreach and abuses of power, including violations of court orders and detentions without due process. She also commended Democrats who have spoken out against Trump, highlighting figures like Cory Booker, Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and others.

According to Harris, Trump’s agenda involves cutting education funding, weakening public institutions, and rewarding the wealthy—all while failing to lower living costs or meet promises made to voters.

“This is a narrow and self-interested vision of America,” she said, “one where truth-tellers are punished, loyalty is prioritized over integrity, and citizens are left on their own as the country withdraws from the global stage.”

A Metaphor of Unity

During her speech, Harris referenced a viral video of elephants at a San Diego zoo huddling together during an earthquake, using it as a metaphor for American unity. “They gathered to protect the vulnerable,” she said, urging the audience to look it up. She linked the earthquake to the fear tactics she attributed to Trump, adding, “When fear tries to divide us, we must stand together.”

Concluding her remarks, Harris acknowledged that the road ahead would be difficult but emphasized collective resilience. “I don’t have all the answers,” she said, “but we’re in this together. Things may get worse before they get better. But this country belongs to all of us.”

While she didn’t mention her political future, Harris continues to raise funds through a joint committee supporting both her campaign and Democratic organizations.
