After a successful first season in European football, former Central Coast Mariners midfielder Max Balard is aiming to move from the fringes of the Socceroos squad to a regular spot in Australia’s midfield.

Now 24, Balard says his time with Dutch Eredivisie side NAC Breda has significantly elevated his game.

“I’ve developed a lot,” Balard shared from the UAE, where he’s part of Tony Popovic’s training squad ahead of Australia’s upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Japan and Saudi Arabia.

“The pace in the Netherlands is much faster than in Australia, and I’m fortunate to be at a club that’s trusted me with playing time. It’s helped refine both the physical and technical aspects of my game. I’ve really embraced the experience.”

During the 2024–25 season, Balard was a key player for NAC Breda, starting 33 of their 34 league matches, as well as featuring in their sole Dutch Cup fixture.

“I’m thankful to the club for the chance to compete in such a high-level league, going up against top Dutch internationals nearly every week,” he said.

“There’s still plenty of room for me to grow, and I’m excited about what’s ahead.”

A first senior cap for the Socceroos could be on the horizon in the coming weeks. While many believe it’s long overdue, Balard is simply grateful to be part of the current training camp and eager to prove his worth.

“I’m proud to be here,” he said. “I want to show that I belong and that I’m ready to step up.”

With Jackson Irvine out due to a foot injury, a spot has opened in Australia’s midfield. While Balard admits his playing style differs from Irvine’s, he’s confident he can contribute meaningfully.

“I play a more defensive midfield role,” he explained. “I like to get on the ball, help build up play, and also contribute around the box when I can.”

He added, “Jackson has been a fantastic player for the national team. It’s unfortunate to see him sidelined, as you always want your best players available. Still, I recognize there’s an opportunity, and I’m pushing myself daily to show the coaches what I’m capable of.”
