NSW Mining Firm Wins $566 Million Pentagon Deal to Secure Scandium Supply

Australian mining company Sunrise Energy Metals has secured a major US defence-backed funding agreement to develop a world-first primary scandium mine in New South Wales, marking a significant step in efforts to build a Western supply chain for critical minerals.

The company’s Syerston Scandium Project, located near Fifield in central western NSW, will receive a conditional loan commitment of about $566 million from the US Department of War (Pentagon) to support the development of the mine and associated processing capabilities.

Scandium is a rare and strategically important metal used in aerospace components, defence technologies, advanced manufacturing, clean energy systems and next-generation telecommunications. Currently, global supply and processing are heavily concentrated outside Western nations, increasing concerns about supply chain security.

The Pentagon-backed investment is part of a broader push by the United States and its allies to reduce dependence on China for critical minerals needed for defence and technology industries. The project is expected to create a new Western source of scandium production from mining through to processing.

Sunrise Energy Metals said the project aims to establish a reliable scandium supply chain, with the US government securing rights linked to future production. The company has also previously entered agreements connected to supplying major aerospace and defence industries.

The announcement highlights Australia’s growing role in the global race for critical minerals, with governments seeking to attract investment into resources needed for electric vehicles, renewable technologies, batteries and military applications.

The development is expected to bring economic opportunities to regional NSW, including potential employment, infrastructure investment and greater involvement in high-value mineral processing.
