Residents in parts of regional South Australia and New South Wales may lose access to free-to-air Seven Network channels next month following a breakdown in negotiations between the network and WIN.
WIN Network has announced it will stop broadcasting channels 7, 7mate, and 7two in Mount Gambier and Loxton in South Australia, as well as Griffith in New South Wales’ Riverina, starting July 1. This means viewers in those areas will no longer be able to watch free-to-air sporting events, such as AFL and test cricket, unless they access them via streaming platforms.
WIN Cites End of Broadcast Agreement
The decision comes after Seven West Media chose not to renew its broadcast agreement with WIN. WIN Network CEO Andrew Lancaster said while they were disappointed, they respected Seven’s right to pursue its own business decisions.
Despite the change, WIN confirmed no job losses are expected, and its operations in Mount Gambier, Berri, and Griffith will continue.
Community Response and Concerns
Peter Kennedy, vice-president of the Riverland Adelaide Crows supporter group, expressed disbelief at the announcement. He said while some fans use streaming services, many older viewers don’t know how to access platforms like 7plus or lack the internet access needed.
“It’s going to be tough for them, to say the least,” he said.
Griffith City Council Mayor Doug Curran also voiced concern, highlighting how free-to-air sports can inspire youth participation in local sports. He warned that forcing families to rely on paid streaming services like Kayo could strain household budgets.
“This takes away a key source of inspiration for our youth,” he said.
Hope for Continued Negotiations
A Seven Network spokesperson acknowledged the importance of regional viewers and said while an agreement hadn’t been reached with WIN, people in affected areas would still be able to access content—including AFL and cricket—via the free 7plus streaming service.
The network also stated it remained open to further discussions with WIN.
Mr Kennedy urged both parties to continue talks, warning of a likely backlash from local communities if the issue isn’t resolved.
Seven West Media recently expanded its regional footprint by acquiring broadcast licences from Southern Cross Austereo, including areas such as Tasmania, Darwin, Broken Hill, and others. The network said this move reflects its ongoing investment in regional markets, with the acquisition expected to be finalized by June 30.
