Sunshine Coast Mourns ‘Zed’ Bilic After Fatal Stabbing Outside His Home
The Sunshine Coast community is grieving the loss of Zdravko Bilic, affectionately known as “Zed,” who was found fatally stabbed in the front yard of his Warana home on Monday evening. The 57-year-old, remembered as warm, humble, and always helpful, had two stab wounds to the stomach. No arrests have been made.
Friends became concerned when Bilic failed to show up for his regular soccer match, something he never missed. Longtime friend Andrew Longhorn described him as a passionate player and a kind, encouraging teammate. “He always gave everything on the field and was quick with a joke,” Longhorn said. “The hardest part is knowing we won’t share another laugh with him.”
Neighbourhood residents, including a local woman named Maria, spoke of his daily kindness and positive energy. “He always smiled and greeted everyone – such a lovely man,” she said. “It’s not bloody fair.”
Detectives believe Bilic may have interrupted an attempted break-in and have identified a 20-hour window—from late Sunday night to when he was found Monday evening—during which the incident occurred. His wife, who was away at the time, returned home after learning of his death.
Queensland Police have brought in the state homicide squad and continue to search for clues. They’re appealing to the public for information, especially CCTV footage from nearby homes captured between 11pm Sunday and 7:35pm Monday.
