Essendon coach Brad Scott sees things differently when it comes to the club’s current injury situation.
The Bombers’ injury woes worsened during their bye week, with Mason Redman, Darcy Parish, and Kyle Langford all experiencing setbacks at training. Redman is out for at least a week with a hamstring issue, while the return timelines for Parish (calf) and Langford (quad) remain unclear.
With 11 players unavailable for this weekend’s clash against Gold Coast — including nine long-term absentees — the injury toll is mounting. Still, Scott rejects the idea that the club is in “crisis,” choosing instead to highlight the opportunity it presents for fringe players.
“People talk about an ‘injury crisis,’ but I can assure you the guys on the edge of selection don’t see it that way,” Scott said.
“It’s their chance to stand out and earn the opportunity they’ve been working towards.
“That’s the positive in all this. Of course, we’d prefer a healthier list, but it’s given players a shot who might not have had it otherwise.
“For example, even if we did make seven changes this week, Angus Clarke was never going to be dropped. I couldn’t have said that seven weeks ago.”
Parish has played only three games this season, dealing with recurring calf issues, while Langford — limited to six matches — has again been troubled by a quad injury.
Scott acknowledged concerns over both players, given the repeated nature of their injuries, but he dismissed the notion that their seasons are over.
“Some are saying their seasons are done — that’s not how we’re approaching it,” he said.
“We’re committed to rehabbing them fully and getting them back on the field as soon as possible.
“Darcy’s back in rehab trying to return before season’s end. He’s a key part of our side, and when he returned last time, he looked sharp.
“Losing him again is tough, but we’ve got to move forward, and we’re fully behind him as we work to understand why this has happened again.
“Recurring injuries are always concerning — you do your best to prevent them, but sometimes they happen, and we’ve just got to manage it.
“I know there’s plenty of interest in our injury list, but my focus is solely on preparing the 23 players who’ll take the field on Saturday.”
