The leader of a local government watchdog group is appearing in court this week for an intervention order hearing following harassment allegations.
An inner-city Melbourne mayor has applied for a protection order against Dean Hurlston, head of Council Watch, citing ongoing harassment.
Stonnington Mayor Melina Sehr testified during a civil contest hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates Court, stating that Mr. Hurlston had subjected her to six years of targeted harassment. In April, Cr Sehr was granted an interim order against him, and she is now seeking a full Personal Safety Intervention Order (PSIO).
A PSIO is designed to protect individuals from unwanted behaviors that cause physical or psychological harm. An interim order remains in place until a decision is made regarding a final order.
Mr. Hurlston, who faces no criminal charges, denies posing any safety threat to Cr Sehr.
On Monday, Cr Sehr presented evidence, including a 486-page file of social media posts, messages, texts, and emails from Mr. Hurlston, Council Watch, and others. She claimed this content had humiliated, harassed, mocked, and intimidated her.
Cr Sehr alleged that the “constant mockery, belittlement, and abuse” began in 2019 after Stonnington Council approved the construction of netball courts near Mr. Hurlston’s residence. By 2022, she claimed, 85% of posts on Council Watch and Stonnington Council Watch referenced her.
The hearing is scheduled to continue over four days.
