A quiet residential street in Melbourne’s northwest was sealed off after police discovered human remains believed to belong to missing man Joshua Bishop, who had vanished a month earlier. A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the case.
Joshua Bishop, 23, was last seen by his housemates in Sunbury on May 27 at around 9:30 pm. He was reported missing by his mother two days later, on May 29. Police described the disappearance as “out of character” and suspicious, sparking an investigation.
On Saturday, after executing a search warrant at a home on Erinbank Crescent in Westmeadows, police found human remains. While the remains have not been formally identified, authorities believe they are those of Joshua Bishop.
A 27-year-old man from Westmeadows was arrested and will be questioned by police. As of now, no charges have been filed. The remains were discovered around 32km from Joshua’s home in Sunbury.
A crime scene was set up, with officers from the Major Crime Scene Unit processing the area. Forensic teams were seen removing the remains from the property and loading them into a police vehicle.
Joshua Bishop had no prior history with police, and both his phone and bank accounts had remained inactive since his disappearance. Police had tracked his phone to Broadmeadows Valley Park on May 27, but further searches of the area failed to yield new leads.
His devastated mother, Kristie, made a public appeal for any information, emphasizing that her son’s disappearance was entirely out of character. “Josh was really open with me, and we had a really good relationship,” she said. “This is not something he would do unless he felt he had to.”
Joshua’s father, Travis, also made an emotional plea on social media, calling for his son’s safe return. “My heart is broken, please complete my family and bring my boy home,” he wrote.
A GoFundMe campaign set up by relatives to support the search has raised over $15,000. “Every moment that passes without answers is incredibly difficult, but we remain determined to keep searching until we find him,” the family wrote on the page.
