A 26-year-old Crawley man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of an older man near Fremantle’s popular entertainment district.
Emergency services found a man in his 60s unresponsive on South Terrace, near Douglas Street, at about 2am on Saturday. The location is only a few hundred metres from Fremantle’s well-known Cappuccino Strip.
The injured man was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital for emergency treatment but could not be saved.
Police arrested two men at the scene as officers began investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. One of those arrested, a 26-year-old man from Crawley in Perth’s western suburbs, was subsequently charged with manslaughter.
The accused was refused bail and was scheduled to appear before Perth Magistrates Court on Sunday.
Police closed part of South Terrace while investigators examined the scene and gathered evidence. The road closure covered the area between Price Street and South Street, causing temporary disruption around the busy Fremantle precinct.
The manslaughter allegation has not yet been tested in court, and the accused is entitled to the presumption of innocence.
