Trump Tries to Reassure Chinese Students Amid Crackdown on US Academia

US President Donald Trump offered reassurances to Chinese students studying in America on Friday, saying they “would be fine” despite his administration’s heightened scrutiny of academic institutions.

Speaking to reporters, Trump attempted to ease concerns after his administration announced plans to tighten regulations on Chinese international students. “They’re going to be okay. It’s going to work out fine,” he said, adding, “We just want to check out the individual students we have. And that’s true with all colleges.”

His more measured remarks come just one day after a judge extended a temporary block on the administration’s efforts to stop Harvard University from enrolling international students.

Harvard Under Pressure

The Trump administration has been engaged in a broader battle with the academic sector — and Harvard in particular — demanding a list of specific students it has flagged as concerning. Harvard has so far refused to comply.

“I don’t know why Harvard’s not giving us the list,” Trump said. “They ought to give us a list and get themselves out of trouble.”

He suggested the university was withholding the names because they may include individuals the administration considers problematic.

Visa Revocations and Political Backlash

Earlier in the week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio pledged to escalate visa cancellations for Chinese nationals. Thousands of student visas have already been revoked, with the administration citing involvement in pro-Palestinian protests and minor infractions, such as traffic violations.

The campaign against student activism has drawn criticism from higher education leaders. At Harvard’s graduation this week, University President Alan Garber received a standing ovation after defending academic freedom and calling on schools to stand firm in the face of what he described as political pressure.

International Student Policy in Focus

Trump emphasized that the administration wants international students who “love” and “cherish” the United States. Still, the overall international student population in the US remains relatively low, averaging under six percent — significantly lower than the UK, where it reaches around 25 percent.
