China’s Answer to SK Hynix Soars Over 500 % on Market Debut

Shares in Chinese memory‑chip maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) surged more than 500 percent on their first day of trading on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market, in one of the most dramatic stock‑market debuts seen in recent years.

The company’s initial public offering raised about $8.6 billion, making it one of Asia’s largest IPOs of the year. Investor enthusiasm around CXMT — seen as a key part of China’s push to develop a domestic semiconductor industry — helped fuel the rally.

By midday, CXMT’s share price had climbed many times above its IPO price, lifting its market value to around 3.3 trillion yuan (about $487 billion) and briefly making it the most valuable company listed on mainland China’s exchanges, surpassing major financial and industrial groups.

CXMT specialises in DRAM memory chips, components essential for computers, servers, smartphones and artificial intelligence systems — a market long dominated by global giants like Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron. The explosive debut highlights both strong domestic investor demand and Beijing’s ambition to reduce reliance on foreign chip technology.

Analysts note that while the performance reflects optimism around artificial intelligence and memory‑chip demand, valuation risks remain in a sector that is cyclical and sensitive to global competition and technology restrictions.
