Current Optus Sport customers will receive discounted access to watch the English Premier League following the handover of broadcasting rights to Stan.
From August 1—when Optus Sport officially shuts down after a nine-year run—Stan Sport, Nine’s streaming platform, will begin airing Premier League matches. The new season kicks off on August 16.
It’s still unclear whether any matches will be shown on Nine’s free-to-air channels.
Stan is paying Optus Sport a $20 million upfront fee and will also contribute to the first payment for the upcoming Premier League rights cycle. The deal additionally includes broadcast rights to the FA Cup, Japan’s J.League, and the U.S. National Women’s Soccer League.
Nine CEO Matt Stanton described the Premier League as “the most-watched football league on the planet” and said the acquisition strengthens Nine’s position as a leading sports broadcaster in Australia.
Under the new arrangement, Optus telecommunications customers who were subscribed to Optus Sport will be offered discounted Stan Sport pricing. These customers will receive more details and special offers in the coming days to help ease the transition.
Optus CEO Stephen Rue explained the move reflects the company’s renewed focus on core telecommunications operations and delivering greater value to its customers.
“Optus Sport has been a leader in football broadcasting for nearly a decade,” Rue said. “Finding the right home for our sports content was essential, and we believe Stan is well-positioned to carry the torch forward.”
Optus Sport subscribers will still have access to UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 coverage, which starts on July 3.
