An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a Darwin grocery store owner.

Linford Feick, 71, was killed at the Territory Friendly Grocer in Nightcliff on Wednesday evening after reportedly confronting a man suspected of shoplifting around 5:15pm.

According to police, Mr Feick asked the individual to return the stolen items before the man allegedly attacked him with a bladed weapon and fled the scene on a bicycle.

Witnesses at the scene attempted to administer first aid and contacted emergency services, but Mr Feick died before paramedics could assist.

Later that evening, an 18-year-old man surrendered to police and was arrested in connection with the incident. On Thursday night, he was formally charged with one count of murder.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Darwin Local Court on Monday, April 28.

Community in mourning

The Nightcliff community, known for its close ties, has been left heartbroken by Mr Feick’s death. He was a familiar and well-loved figure in the area.

On Thursday, locals paid tribute by leaving flowers and handwritten notes outside the Territory Friendly Grocer, creating a spontaneous memorial in his honor.

In the wake of the tragedy, NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro pledged swift action to introduce tougher bail legislation. The proposed reforms would align the Northern Territory’s laws with those of Victoria and New South Wales, requiring courts to ensure that a person seeking bail does not pose a risk to the community.
